We are finished 🥳🥳 @mimmmsy CRUSHED the marathon finishing at 5 hours 4 minutes!! And I finished at 7 hours on the dot! (Tbh better than expected).. Shoutout to @g.johnston40 for making the best signs, refilling all my water bottles, and keeping me laughing.. Now bring on the cheeseburgers 🍔

Northville-Lake Placid trail is complete with a 31 mile day to get out of the rain! Special thanks to the @timeless_tavern for staying open so that I could have a victory beer 🍻
Highlights of the last day included:
- waking up at Mud Lake Lean-To to a warm fire courtesy of the two hikers who also stayed there 🔥

Our final recap of the Teton Crest Trail! Despite leaving Solitude Lake with plenty of sun, by the time we were nearing the top of the switchbacks of Paintbrush Divide, weather had rolled in. The mountains we just came from were dark, & a small drizzle kept us from taking our time. Despite needing a break (hi, I’m out of shape & work at a desk), a few scattered sounds of thunder had us on our toes. We didn’t want to get to the snow so tired that we were shaky while crossing it, or after the rain if it became wet and sloshy, or reach the top of the pass when lightning started, or hang back & wait and find out we missed our window, so we just continued on. For those who have been around since my PCT hike in 2017, you know I don’t love snow. This was my first time using an ice axe in a situation where it would matter - the stretch was steep and had a limited amount of snow before turning into a rock cliff, so a slip would be unforgiving, but fortunately rangers had been through and cleared a path across that we could follow. It was several feet above the trail itself, so we had to slide down the other side to get back onto trail [pic 2], which may have been the scariest part (thanks for going first @elise.ott 😅). From there the rest of the trip was downhill, and we stopped briefly before reaching our campsite at Holly Lake for dinner. These campsites were some of the cooler ones I’ve been to. The trail to them looked like it went straight into the lake, but after double checking that it was correct we realized it veered right and went along the side of the lake before crossing scattered rocks in the water to a forested area on the other side where the campsites were. We had it all to ourselves except for the deer who gave me a heart attack when I saw it through the bottom of my tent as the sun was setting [pic 4]. There were wind barriers built around the tent sites with logs and sticks and it gave a bit of a Blair Witch vibe with the rain and gloomy weather, so I went to sleep convinced it was haunted and kept my audiobook on in my earbuds the full night. 6 miles were left in the morning to Leigh Lake where we left our car. Can’t recommend these 40 miles enough!

Crossing Hurricane Pass gave our best views of the Tetons yet, and we reentered the Grand Teton National Park. Although I thought we’d seen the best views at the top, the descent revealed Schoolroom Glacier, which was melting into a pool of super blue water inside what we described as a crater of dirt. Took the prize for my favorite water feature of the trip. As we dropped into the valley we saw our 3rd moose (in the video), and then shortly after, our 4th and final moose (in the photo). At a trail intersection that was several miles from road access we began to see lots of day hikers, and had made a game time decision to continue towards Paintbrush Divide. More on this in the next post, but the TL:DR is the rangers said we’d need ice axes for the snow on the pass and we were expecting a possibility of thunderstorms and wanted to have one last check of the weather forecast before deciding to go, just to make sure we wouldn’t end up having to cross the snow while it was pouring rain, or the pass if there was thunder and lightning. Forecast looked good, so we pushed on. Had lunch at a stream not realizing it was as close as it was to Solitude Lake, so then stopped again to dip our feet as the skies were blue and cloudless, and we weren’t feeling rushed.

The bugs have been relentless (see slide with photo of my pack at lunch) which is the only downside of this trail… thankfully Elise packed picaradin because I forgot to consider bugs when I packed. Even with us regularly spraying ourselves, I’m covered in bites - mosquitos, horse flies, regular flies, sweat bees.. they’re all out right now. We also ran into former @backpackerradio guest Lt. Cookoobird at lunch who was doing the entire 40 mile trail in a day. Other highlights were the A+ views, lots of wildflowers out, not getting mauled by a bear, and seeing two moose (mom and baby) walking the trail right past our camp as we packed up in the morning. That video is on my other camera and will be on YouTube eventually, but it was very cute.

It’s 40ish miles through (mostly) Grand Teton National Park, and we were able to get permits that allowed us to complete it in 3 nights. Found a nice campsite in our night one permit area along a stream, and have been extra cautious with our foods & scented items (for example we stopped to eat dinner a mile before getting to our campsite.)
